Graduation – the word sparks mixed emotions. Sadness for the ending of those things familiar, excitement for what lies ahead.
National Farmers has always supported our farm family’s agricultural journeys. But nothing warms our hearts more than lending a hand to high school seniors who are embarking on their chosen path into the agricultural world.

This year, we again celebrate all the exceptional individuals who applied for our Farm Kids for College Scholarship program and present the three recipients – Miranda Klingler, Emma – Claire Wright and Brayden Reid.

Our $2,500 recipient hails from Carthage, Illinois and plans to become a veterinarian specializing in production systems. Miranda Klingler, daughter of Darin and Samantha Klinger, has centered her ambitions on serving her ag community by caring for their livestock.

While cattle are a staple on their midwestern farm, she and her brother are proud to share the responsibilities of caring for a commercial flock of sheep. “We are solely responsible for all the care and decision making regarding the flock,” Miranda says.

It’s evident her experiences on the farm came into play when she talked about collective marketing. “Pooling resources, increasing bargaining power, and tapping into new or more lucrative markets can help farmers gain higher prices.” She went on to say that farmers who set themselves and their products apart from the mainstream are rewarded. “By focusing on specialized segments of the market, farmers can differentiate themselves, create stronger customer loyalty, and secure higher profit margins.”

Our second scholarship recipient, receiving $1,500, also has her sights set on becoming a large animal veterinarian. Emma – Claire Wright, daughter of Andrew and Melanie Kelso, is the fifth generation to be raised on their farm in Petersburg, Tennessee. In addition to the beef cattle, Wright says the farm also has a family-run sawmill and is a sanctuary for older show horses. “I offer these horses great care and a comfortable farm to live out their remaining years.”

When asked about collaborative marketing, Emma – Claire detailed five advantages that can lead to higher prices and increased profitability – strength in numbers, shared resources and costs, better visibility and branding, access to new markets and reducing risks. She also suggested exploring niche markets, such as raising organic vegetables or heritage breeds of livestock, as a path that avoids a crowded market. “Marketing these products directly to elite consumers and gourmet restaurants would enable an artisanal label, setting the farm apart.”

Our third recipient, Brayden Reid, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Son of Garett and Amanda Reid of Concordia, Missouri, he grew up raising and showing cattle and pigs. “I take great pride in our farm and want to become an agriculture education instructor to pass this passion on to my students,” he said.

When asked about collective marketing, Brayden said, “Collaborative marketing allows producers to overcome challenges associated with scale, access, and competition to achieve better pricing, increased profitability and enhanced market stability.” This strategic approach not only benefits individual farmers but also contributes to sustainable agriculture communities and regional economic growth.”

He also noted that niche marketing empowers producers to stand out in crowded markets. But the product is just the beginning. “By creating distinctive products, fostering memorable customer experiences, and capitalizing on local connections, producers can charge premium prices and build a loyal customer base.”

“Consumers who purchase locally feel a sense of pride, knowing they are benefiting their community,” Brayden noted.
At National Farmers, we are all about supporting family farmers and, in turn, contributing to the sustainability of our rural communities. We eagerly anticipate hearing of the positive impact these three scholarship recipients and all our applicants will have on their agricultural communities.
